You job sounds soooooooooooo cool. On Friday May 18 you came into my history class and showed us the medal of honor I think that it is really cool that you were one of the ones that got it out of alot of other people who didn't get one but there was barelly any people who actually got the medal of honor. I also think that the medal is shiny and is reall special to you.

Col. Fox I respectfully request your help. I have just finished reading " The Quiet Hero " and I feel that I must send a letter of thanks to PM2 George E. Wahlen, not that you and all M O H winners should receive letters of thanks, but this is personal. I have searched the web for a contact with no sucess, you being a marine with all George for fellow marines. I know that you understand the importance of this letter. Respectfully, David P. Sir, I have just finished reading your book , MARINE RIFLEMAN,FORTY THREE YEARS in the CORPS, for the SECOND time, and enjoyed it even more than the first time! I am sure that there will be further readings, also! I, like many former 1/6er's who arrived after your tour with 1/6, would have enjoyed having you as our leader. Aftering arriving at 1/6 in 1984, I still heard many stories of the infamous trek to the top of Mt. Fuji that you led your men up. I sure wished that I was one of the "few" who climbed it with you that day! Once again, thanks for writing such a terrific book, and I hope to meet you in person soon while at a 1/6 reunion that is still being planned! Take Care, sir, and please advise if you are ever in the East Tennessee area, (Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is beautiful to see any time of the year) Max Roark (1/6 Wpns Co., USMC 1983-87)

Greetings Sir, just a quick note to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your book Marine Rifleman. A signed copy was purchased for me by a friend at the Salem, Va. gun show recently. Reading about the number of things you accomplished and the perfection for which you strived has been an inspiration for me to work and push harder in everyday life, and realize what a motivated person can do and accomplish. What a career! What a story! I found myself laughing out loud at times. Thanks for your service to our Marine Corps and country. I am a better person after reading that book. Bud Nininger. Hello Col. Fox I was one of those 1/6 slackers in the summer of '82 you so aptly described in your book! You're right, we weren't very good. I only spent part of the summer with you, being released from active duty on 21 August, but you certainly made an impression. The humps were unbelievable. I'll never forget a 12 miler, one of the first I think, on a very hot day. I can still see the guys passing out and falling into the dirt, little clouds of dust puffing up around them, and then the meat wagon following behind to load them on and get them cooled off. I thought you were crazy! With hindsight I realize that's not the case, of course. By the way, was it your idea to put us in trenches and have the M-60's foll over us? Another memorable morning! One end of our trench collapsed and buried I guy, all except for his feet. A frantic dig with helmets got him out okay, but again, I wondered: is this normal? Thanks for the memories, and I enjoyed your book. Semper Fi, Cpl Dwight D. Jenkins, Squad Leader

Dear Col. Fox: I am writing you again, this time with sad news. The captain whose name you mentioned in "Marine Rifleman," Warren F. Lloyd, passed away 22 Dec 06 of cancer. His daughter Fran told me his obituary is scheduled to appear next week and we (my father, my sister and I) shall go to Arlington 29 Jan 06 at 1100 to lay him to rest. I'll never forget the words you said about my uncle and what touched me even more was that you included him and them in your book. I'm so pleased he inspired you so; "UW" (Uncle Warren) was that kind of man. Please keep him in your prayers. I also wish you a Happy Birthday (belated though this is) and you and your wife a Happy Anniversary. God bless you, Sir, and if I may say so: Thank you for your service. It always is a special honor for me to contact a Medal of Honor recipient. Sincerely, Rosemary E. Lloyd, Elberon, NJ MISSMOOHERSELF@Excite.com

Sir, Way back in the late 1970's when you were stationed at Quantico, I was a Navy Corpsman TAD from Lejeune, to the TBS clinic. Since I had a couple of jumps under my belt as a civilian, I was the "Doc" that went with you and the others when you jumped that summer. One of my favorite memories of that time was one particular jump where an Army General went into the trees and the dutiful young officer behind him followed him to the same tree! Hi Col. I am still working for the Branson Chamber of Commerce and for some reason you came to mind. I worked with the Radisson when all of you came to our town in 2003. Was that just three years ago? My husband and myself picked you and your beautiful wife up at the Arkansas airport. I hope all is well with you and your family. God Bless you and take care. I think of all of you who visited our town and I am STILL thrilled I was a part of your visit here. I am now the Chair for the Women Veterans Committee and Branson invites women veterans here the third week of May every year to be honored. I love meeting all these special ladies. This may we had two women, one was 90 and one was 93, both from WWII. Next year we expect over 300 women to come and stay the week and enjoy our hospitality. Wish you all would come back here. My best to all. Respectively Mary Slivka Branson Chamber of Commerce and CVB (I wore a hat the whole time the CMOH was here!)

Sir, I hope this email finds your well. While surfing the "net," I came upon your webpage. I enjoyed viewing the pictures you posted: thank you for sharing them. Though your Medal of Honor ceremony was moving, I was especially proud to see the picture of you on the confidence course at OCS. I attended PLC Seniors in 1991, under your command. The pictures of you at OCS reminded me of the most vivid memory I have from OCS: the night march, leading into SULE II. As the sun came up that morning, the column halted for a brief break. I turned around and for the first time noticed that you were in the column, right behind me, in our formation. Sir, that display of leadership was and remains implanted in my mind. As you know, we were given lecture after lecture on leadership and "leading from the front." Well, your example that morning solidified those lessons in this Marine. There was no need for the CO of OCS to be in that column--but there you were. I remember my fellow Candidates talking among ourselves--all of us were motivated you were out there with us and it pushed up that much harder to live up to your example. I have left active service and sadly, my home state of Virginia (raised in Richmond). I settled in CA upon leaving active duty after two tours and attended law school at the Univ. of San Diego (though, like most reservists, I have been called up twice since 9-11). As much as I miss Virginia, there are worse fates then living in Southern CA! Please don't spend your time responding to me---there is no need. I just wanted to quickly thank you, not only for your 43 years of service to our nation, but also, to thank you for the lessons you taught me and all of the candidates so fortunate to have attended OCS under your command. I am convinced you made me a better officer and a better man. Very Respectfully, Chris Brewster

Colonel Fox, I hope that this message finds that all is well with you and your family. I have recently begun plans to fulfill a promise that I made to myself 37 years ago---to return to Vietnam and retrace some of my military operations. I have been an avid hiker all my life and have kept in condition. I have put my last child through college and I am finally in a position to travel to Vietnam. While doing internet research I linked to Dewey Canyon and, of course, your prominence resides there. I am very very pleased to read all that you have accomplished before, during, and after Dewey Canyon. I am extremely proud to have known you and served under your command. I joined your command post group two days after your actions for which you received the Medal of Honor. I was the forward observer for Bravo Co. and was transferred to the "Alpha Tigers" on Februray 24th, 1969 replacing your observer lost on the 22nd. The horrible irony was that we were hit with mortars that same day on a little hill called "Lang Ha", not a 1000 meters from your position. We also lost many from our command post (Cpt. Merdick, Lt. O'Toole, G/Sgt Wuster, and radio operators Dedick and Robinson). Most simply called me "Mac". I was your "f.o.1" until Lt. Connelly replaced you in March of 1969. I have vivid memories of those intence weeks, none more so than the men who were with you on 2/22 describing your heroic actions that day. I have memories of your sincere interest in the welfare of your men and their families at home (mine included). Our route from Objective "G"(213030)on March 9th to Tam Boi(239037), with a dramatic extraction on March 18th, remains very clear. I have my f.o. mesage book and all my maps, lest I forget. I thank you for the example you provided for all of us; and i can assure you it served me well. I am especially pleased to read about the support of your wonderful family, and was moved by their correspondences posted on this site. I ordered your book today and am very anxious to read through it. I noticed, also, that you have an engagement in Meriden, Ct. in November of this year. You will be a few miles from my home. If there are any courtesies that I can extend to you (pick up at airport, stay at my home, etc.), it would be the honor of my life, Sir. Please be well and take care. Sincerely, Cpl. Paul Macala

Dear Sir, my son, almost 18, wanted to be a Marine since 9/11. He joined the Marine ROTC program in his Highschool and enjoyed every minute of it. He is signed into the Marine Delayed Entry Program and will go to bootcamp in 2006. In 2004, our family visited the Manassas Airport, where they held a WW2 Memorial weekend. My son went into a building looking at all the photographs of Military History among other historical information. He came back to us after a while with a book in his hand and a big smile on his face. He told us he just met a fascinating man. This man was you. My son read your book and you became his hero (his words). I just wanted you to know what an impact you had on my son.

Col. Fox, My family and I had the honor of being seated with you and other dignitaries at my son's graduation from Boot Camp at MCRD on September 23, 2005. My son, PFC. Aaron Denning was selected the Honor Man for Mike Company. We are as proud of him as we are of all Marines who have elected to serve our great Nation and others. I thought it a bit ironic, Aaron, who has always wanted to be a Marine, was born on March 2nd, the same date that you where awarded The Medal of Honor. God Bless you and your's sir. Semper Fi

Col Fox, I was a candidate in 1990 and still remember the awe we all felt when you came around our company. I specifically remember the final inspection, and you asking me how many Marines died in the Beirut bombing in 1983. I didn't know the answer...I knew everything I thought might be asked but didn't know this very important number. Since this time, I've made it a point to remember, in detail, many of the Marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Sadly, there has been ample opportunity in the last few years. You've been a great inspiration to a great number of Marines who have followed you, and you will no doubt be a a Marine Corps legend in the likes of Dan Daly and Smedley Butler. With best wishes, T

Sir, let me say first that I had the privelege of meeting you on several occasions. I just graduated from the VTCC in May, and was lucky enough to see you and shake your hand at every Mil Ball we had. Although I never had the chance to be in the Corps while you were here at Tech (I arrived in Aug of 01) I wish I could have been able to see you in action. I vividly recall my Dyke (Val DiMichele, LTJG USNR) telling me that you are the only person to ever stand up at Corps Lab and the regiment would suddenly be quiet. Thank you for your service to our country, and I have read your book several times. Dear sir, I am honored to have heard of you and your great accomplishments in the Marine Corps. I was recently sent to Tallahasse Florida for my new job and I was wearing a dog tag with my nephew Cpl.John T Olsons hologram with In Loving memory engraving on the back and was asked if it was my son, I told the man Greg Small whom you served with many years ago that it was my sisters boy who was 21 years and just recently killed in Iraq this past February 21st. He told me about your book and said it was a wonderful book and I should read it, I am so glad that I have found your book and can not wait to begin reading it. My family is very distraught over this terrible loss to our family, my nephew John was a wonderful boy and loved being a Marine and he was so very proud of what he was doing, but we are having a hard time dealing with our loss. I hope this book will help us through this difficult time. This May 30th there is going to be a memorial dedication to John in Chicago, Il, they are going to rename the street he grew up on Cpl. John T. Olson Blvd. I think this is a wonderful honor for him, also his high school Elk Grove Village High is setting up a scholarship program in his honor. I now have a special place in my heart for all the Service men and Women who love and protect our wonderful country. Dear Col. Fox; I discovered this web site while searching for info on how I could get my copy of Marine Rifleman autographed. I discovered the mother lode. My wife gave me the book for Christmas last year and after having read it I had a desire to get it autographed. I was a boot in Plt. 129 at mcrd in the spring of 1957 along with a couple of your other guest book signitures. There is not much I can add to what is already written here except to tell you that your influence on my life has influenced many others. I have a son who followed me in the Marines and is a very successful Police officer in Oceanside Ca. and being in a position of command he is passing on the things that I learned from your example as I did to many subordinates in my life. I have formed the opinion that an inordinate number of great military leaders in the US have come from Virginia. Must be something in the soil. Or the women, I believe that your foundation was laid by an excellent mother and a good father. God Bless you Sir and thank you for your lifelong service to our country and our Corps.

Dear Col. Fox: First of all, I am honored and thrilled to write to a Medal of Honor recipient. There are 4 groups of people I consider it an honor and privilege to write to or meet: Medal of Honor recipients, Pearl Harbor survivors former POWs and Holocaust survivors. I watched my videocassette of "American Valour" yesterday and was pleased as punch (again) to hear you tell the story of the recruiter who told you that, some day, we Americans would never be able to pay you Marines enough for what you would do for us. I also had read that in a copy of your book "Marine Rifelman," which I had given to my Uncle Harold for Christmas 2 years ago. In your book, unlike the show, you mentioned the recruiter by name and that really was NEAT. That recruiter is my uncle, Warren F. Lloyd, and I'm happy to say he's alive and well and now living with his daughter, Fran, in Dumfries, VA. Uncle Warren is 84 years old and is in great shape. He Emails my sister almost daily and he and I kid about my service in the Naval Reserve. I am a Marine Corps granddaughter and niece. In addition to my uncle Warren, 4 other uncles - Allen ("Tadgie"), Don, Harold and Wally - were Marines during WWII. My paternal grandfather, Calvin A. Lloyd, has a rifle range in Quantico named for him. But there's also Navy in my family. My Dad was a ltjg during the war - serving in Kwajelein and Enewetok (forgive my misspellings). My Uncle Calvin S. "Bub" served on the Silversides. My maternal grandfather was a captain in the Navy's medical corps. His wife (my grandmother) was a "yeomanette" during WWI and I was in the Naval Reserve for 10 years. Only my mother and my sister did not do military service; they were our supporters. Uncles Don, Tadgie and Bub died of cancer many years ago. But my Dad and Uncles Harold, Wally and Warren are alive and well and living in various parts of the USA. God bless you, Col. Fox, and thank you for your service. And thank you for reading my note and for mentioning my uncles. I'm so proud of all my family but the "Lloyd Boys" really have my heart. Sincerely, Rosemary E. I met COL. Fox while he was still on active duty, in 1990. I was in the delayed entry program. RSS Beckley, WV went on a trip to the 8TH & I for an evening parade, we stayed at MCB Quantico in the Barracks. Col. Fox came over and talked to us for a while. Very personable, very inteligent, and 100% Marine. Then, years later, I find out that my Dad, Curtis Saunders, served with him in 1/9. I did not find that out until after my Dad passed away at the age of 52. Anyway, I hold the UTMOST respect for Col. Fox, not only for his accomplishments, but for the difference his many years of service in the Marines made for all of in the Coprs today. In one way or another, his legacy still lives, whether it is from the officer that gor inspired by him, ot the veteran that got to come home because of the selfless sacrifices he made. Semper Fidelis is more than a slogan, it runs deep.

Colonel; I have the great honor of being a graduate of Platoon 129, MCRD. You were my SDI. Our series was distinguished by the fact we had to convert from 8-man drill to the new 13-man squads. I attained the highest score on qualificaton day at Camp Matthews -- a very rainy day, and I shot a 222 -- left-handed, with your encouragement all the way. I never shot less in my career. I tried to follow your extremely large footprints through my career in the Corps. We met briefly in Kaneohe after I returned from my first tour in SVN (1962). I was in the DMZ area from Nov67 to Aug68. I too received a meritorious commission in Dec69 and retired in Jan78 as a regular unrestricted Captain. We met again briefly when my son graduated from TBS in 1991. He will retire soon as a Major. He too is a Mustang! And, to make my story short, I worked in SWL, Inc., with one of your sisters in 1978-81! Semper Fi! and God Bless! Donald R. Brown Captain, USMC (Ret'd)

Dear Sir -- One of my most prized possessions is a fitness report that you signed evaluating my performance as an S-3A and Candidate Platoon Commander while you commanded USMC OCS in 1990-1991. Your leadership proved to be an inspiration not only to me, but to the officer candidates as well. I did not realize that those lessons of leadership would carry over into the 'civilian world' throughout the following years of my life. It was only after reading your book, that I realized the full scope of your dedication & commitment to the Corps and our Country. As I prepare to deploy to Iraq -- (now wearing an Army uniform), I carry a typed copy of the Chapter "Lessons Learned" end-notes in my wallet. You should know that your example is still having an impact on the Marines and soldiers who are deployed overseas in the Global War on Terrorism. Thank you for your leadership, and serving as a role model of what professional Marine truly is.

Col. Fox, I was absolutely delighted Memorial Day, while watching a program honoring Medal of Honor recipients, when to my great astonishment you appeared as one of the honorees. I recognized you immediately, even before seeing your name, and I was in Platoon 1077 at MCRD, way back in 1956. I often wondered how many of my Marine Corps friends and acquaintances paid the altimate price in Viet Nam. Your story is one of honor and valor and I'm pleased that you are here to tell us about it. I look forward to reading Marine Rifleman. I tried to stay out of your sights in bootcamp, and did a pretty good job of it most of the time. I don't know if you were able to make a good Marine out of me, but you sure were a fine example of the kind of man I hoped to be. You were an inspiration, and left an indelible impression on me in the short three months I was under your command. Although I only served my three years - once a Marine always a Marine!

Hey Wes. In looking through your photo album, I did not see any pictures of your Quantico SkyDivers days. You were the president of the club at that time. When you left, I gave you a picture of yourself in the MCAS Quantico's DC-3 holding a wind drift indicator. All of the members of the club signed the picture. Do you still have the picture? I also have a picture of all of the jumpers standing beside the DC-3 at the air station. The only ones that I can remember by name are Sgt. Swiderski and Gy/Sgt Henry. Dear Col. Fox, Sir. Just today, I finished reading your book, ``Marine Rifleman.'' As a poolee and the brother of a fallen Marine, I wanted to attempt to express to you what reading your story has meant to me. Your leadership, humility, and concern for your Marines echo clearly from each page. You inspire and set an example for future generations to follow. As I make my way along the path towards becoming a Marine, I will use your story as a barometer to measure my progress and myself by, and as motivation to challenge myself to always do better. In a time where we face many challenges as a country, a society, and a culture, your words are refreshing in their candor and unimpeachable ethical tenor. You represent the Marine I aspire to become. Thank you for the standard you set.

I am 57 years old and did not serve in the military due to a physical deferment. I did however and still do have great compassion for the soldiers who serve in the military. One year ago I read a story by David Nelson, about Lee Roy Herron who was killed in Vietnam in 1969. I had friends who died in Vietnam, but nothing ever gripped me like the story of Lee Roy. I understand he served under you. Being a brother in Christ and the unselfishness that he displayed by praying with and for other soldiers, somehow has bonded me to him. It is a shame that Lee Roy is not with us, but he has been with the Lord Jesus Christ for all these years. I hope you and all the other troops he touched have accepted Christ as your saviour. Thank you so very much for sending the autographed copy of your book and photograph to my friend Roy Martinez, a former Marine of the Alpha 1/9 that served directly under your command in VietNam. The letter I wrote to you about Lance Corporal "Marty" Martinez was back in September 2002. I requested your support in helping Roy receive his long overdue purpleheart which was for RPG wounds during that February 23 Ashou Valley battle. My letter indicated that I was obtaining all the proper documentation which included a contact with our local Congressman and would followup by contacting you again and presenting you with a copy of the support letters from the others before soliciting your support. It took me many months, almost a year to track down both the Field Corpman, another soldier that was in the battle at the same time, and yourself, the commanding officer. I now have put together a package of letters to document the incident and all that will be left is a letter of support from you. This package will be turnrd over to Congressman Ciro Rodriguez of Texas, and he and his staff will do their utmost to expedite the paperwork through the Dept of Navy and get the award documented as official and hopefully the Congressman will present this honor to Roy Martinez in a public townhall meeting with active and retired military members and his family present. I will be sending you this package of information this week for your review and written support. I will enclose a postage paid envelope so that the items can be returned to me. I will then carry over the documents to the Congressional Office here in San Antonio and hope for the best. The "Doc" has now retired as a Major from the Army National Guard, and his health is quickly deteriorating. The other soldier, that was in the line heading up the hill with Roy Martinez, is severally depressed and to discuss the Viet Nam expreience with him was contraindicated. Anyway, according to the Navy, a letter from Roy, the Doc, and you will be enough supportive documentation to review and reward the purpleheart for those war sustained injuries. Please feel free to contact me for any information or followup. Thank you Daniel K. Akana DKAKANA@AOL.COM 9111 Wild Trails San Antonio, Tx 78250-3018 (210) 680-9097

Sir, I'm happy to see you are doing well. I was a watch stander at the AMCONGEN in Munich, '71-'74 during the time you were Company XO. I have often thought of your experiences and look to you as a role model. I remember your opionions on decorations. I wonder if you think the Corps has fallen into the habit of awarding too many "fart" ribbons. I think that the trend today to wear a history of duty stations cheapens awards. The Embassy Duty ribbon strikes me as silly. Embassy Duty was so great, I should give a ribbon th Sgt. Maj. Popp who encouraged me to apply. Enough complaining. God bless you, sir. I'll always be proud to have served with you.

I have recently completed the reading of your book, with great interest. Now I am compeled to write to you to express sincere gratitude for the personal and positive influence that you have had on my life, as well as many other young Marines. I have had the good fortune of being one of your boots in platoon 176,MCRD San Diago, September '55'. You were absolutely the most squared away Marine in a sea of Marines. At age 18, when everything was new and most of us were eager to absorb knowledge and acquire experience you stood out like a beacon in the night as a model of what a Marine's Marine could be like. You were the source of inspiration for many Marines throughout you life. For every Marine who's heart and mind you may have influenced, mine in particular,I sincerly thank you. You have contributed much to our country,to the Corp, and most certainly to many individuals through out your life. My wish for you and your family is a long and prosperous life. "Semper Fidelis". I can't really put all the joy into words on how happy and honared to meet you. I am proud to say once a Marine...always a Marine! Thank you for setting THE example.I served from 68 through 72 with 5th Recon and 1st ANGLICO and trained for jumpschool with the legendary "mustanger" Capt. Clovis C. "Buck" Coffman. Another Marine's Marine you've probably met. I was way to wet behind the ears to ever appreciate what the Corps gave me until I reached my late 40's. Now, I wouldn't sell the experience for a million bucks. Semper Fidelis and AIRBORNE!

Col. Fox Sir, For sometime now I have been wanting to relate a story about you that you might find amusing. When 1/6 landed in Guam in 1983 I remember a lot of press were there for some reason. As we came off the LZ and formed into column for movement into the jungle we halted along the road. I took one knee and faced outboard. As I looked around I noticed behind me a female reporter with a group of Army and Navy officers around her. I could not understand what the Army was doing there so I tried to listen in to the conversation. At this point, you walked up to the group. At once everyone turned to face you. I don't remember the reporters first words to you but I do remember her question and your response. She asked you how long you had been in "the service?" And your answer was, as I remember it, "Well, first let me clarify something." Pointing to the Army and Navy officers in the group you continued "These men are in "the service", I am in The Marine Corps!" I cannot tell you how big the smile was that came to my face then and now as I remember it. It has stuck with me all these years. I am sure you have long forgotten the incident and I hope it brought a smile to your face. Semper Fi, Andy De Cusati God grant us VICTORY and protect THE CORPS

Sir, I wanted to thank you for a signed Marine Rifleman copy that you handed me at 1/23 Houston.I was the Marine that ask you "..if you got a chance to visit the Philippines?" and your response was " yes , I went to SCUBA school in your country." I later realized that you even went to my hometown of San Jose Mindoro for OPERATION TULUNGAN ( spring 1962 ).My father later confirmed the event saying he was in sixth grade polishing GI's shoes for a penny or two while my granddad served in the AFP ScoutRangers. That LZ, if you recall ,sir, was an airport and at the south end of it is where we lived. SIR, It is with my highest regards to tell you how honored it is to say "Thank You" for the outstanding career and all that you did for the Corps and our nation. I had a favorite local "buddy" that I spent 30 years trying to find out how ,when and where he died in Viet Nam .One day at a yard sale for the price of .10 cents I found a paperback about MOH winners and when I read your story I fell out of my chair . My closest friend thru high school William "Bill" Christman was that friend's name and you were his commander. I was with the US Army in Korea from June '68 to Aug'70 and read about Bill's death but now I am at peace to know after all these years that he was the best at everything and he truly served with the best!My Brother was in the USMC Sept'52 to Sept '55 and in Korea and gave me your book for Christmas. If I ever have the honor and chance to get it signed - it would be a memorable treasure for myself, my brother Ed and of course my old friend Bill! Thank You for these few lines and all those that so proudly served . We will never forget Warmest Regards and may God bless you and your family. P. E "Packy" Pickrell Mt Airy, MD .

Colonel Fox: I have just finished reading your MARINE RIFLEMAN (Brassey's, 2002)and I am writing to say that I cannot stop thinking about your magnificent book. It constitutes a solid chunk of interesting history. As the author of such a narrative, you have left a great contribution to the Marine Corps Tradition and world history. MARINE RIFLEMAN is strong, tough, intelligent, gungy and honest, just like its modest author. You may dimly remember me: we met on the helo ( I boarded in PA )on the way up to Camp Smith in November, 1984. We sat across from each other on the chopper, and had some brief conversation. I gave a speech near the end of the banquet. My NOT GOING HOME ALONE: A MARINE'S STORY (Ballantine Books)has been in print since late Summer 2001, an dhas been selling steadily ever since. NOT GOING HOME ALONE tells a much narrower story than yours. Nonetheless, you might find this book of some small interest. Again, congratulations on MARINE RIFLEMAN. It is one of the most powerful and valuable books I have read. My best to you and your family. You have all sacrificed A LOT for our great country. SEMPER FIDELIS, Jim James J. While I intend to get my hands on your book and on of those autographed photographs, I already have your autograph. I still have an efficiency signed by you when we were with Co.A MSG Bn. I have oftened wondered if you knew the impact you had on so many young men who finished their tours and left the Corps. Watching a 40 year old MOH winning Captain with nothing to prove pump out 10 for the Corps after a 3 mile run in freezing Warsaw left a lasting impact on a 19 year old corporal. 12 years later while leading a basic SWAT school on a 5 mile run in a cold driving rain, I didn't have to ask myself what I was doing there. Sir, It was my most memorable time in the Corps to have served under your command in 82-83. I was assigned to Alpha Co. 2nd Plt. You were my frist Battalion Commander in the FMF, I learned what it meant to be a Marine there. I always tell my friends about a Battalion hike we did on Okinowa. You led us out for about 15 or 20 miles, I forget wich, even carring an 80mm base plate. When we returned you had us fall in to a Battalion mass formation, all I could think about was how badly my feet, back, neck and shoulders hurt. When you took your position in front of us you cut off a corner of your plug with your pocket knife, put the piece in your mouth, chewed it for a second, spit and said "you look a little weak 1/6!" Those words have been with me ever since. I learned that day that no matter what the situation respect is earned. You are my life's example of how respect is EARNED. Col. Fox I want to thank you for signing a copy of your book that my son purchased from you. A special thanks for taking the time to talk with him. I went to visit him at Quantico this weekend and he told me about his chance encounter with you. I'm not sure you remember me. I was the Alpha Company FO for a short while - just after you took command. My transfer to H&S Company took place just prior to leaving Vandy for Dewey Canyon. If memory serves me correctly, you were not pleased that I took the transfer. I had been with each Company in 1/9 by that time and going to H&S completed my service with each company in 1/9. Not something everyone got to do. I have been reading your book and enjoying the detail of those days in the valley. I had to smile as I turned the pages and read your account of each situation as it unfolded. Morning RPG attacks, cold/wet days and nights, and the CH47's lifting us out. It was just the way I remember it. I want to wish you good health and the best of everything. You were the wake up call that we needed. Just as a side note. I am working on my last enlistment with the NCNG. Had to jump to the Army to get that aviation MOS I always wanted. Semper Fi.

Sir: I had the honor of serving under your command during your tour as Commanding Officer of OCS during the summers of 92 and 93. I remember the day of your retirement because our instructors kept us indoors the entire day so as not to run afoul of the host of distinguished visitors present on that occasion. One of the lessons I recall most vividly was the emphasis on integrity - any candidate whose actions even appeared to besmirch his honor promptly vanished from the ranks. Dear Col. Fox, Met you on 2Dec of this month at the VFW in Manassas when my old CO and good friend Jerry Martin asked me to come down and meet you. It was a wonderful afternoon and I was very happy to meet you and listen to your remarks. Perhaps you w/ remember a petition that you signed for the John Basilone stamp effort that is currently underway at the John Basilone Det. of the Marine Corps League in Milltown,NJ. I was an 0331 squad leader in early '69 when Dewey Canyon kicked off and as you know you guys took the brunt off the fighting and we (F2/3) were held in reserve. I have since spoken w/Jerry and asked him for your address, the reason being that those of us at the John Basilone Det. have several avenues we are currently pursuing for the US Postal Service to honor one of America's legendary heroes. I have already had success w/my Congressman Chris Smith, Chmn. Veteran's Affairs Comm. to sponsor legislation regarding the stamp. However we would like for this to move forward more expedicously and I would like to ask you if we can enlist the support of as many MOH recipients as possible to respond in writing to Kevin J. Col. Fox, What an honor it was to serve under you. You may remember this incident, I was a Pfc. in Motor T at OCS the summer of '90. I was driving the ambulance hummer following the candidates on a 3 mile hump when one fell out with a temp. of 105. Doc put him in my hummer and told me to get to sickbay ASAP! So I took off across the parade deck a-flying. You and the Sgt. Major (Canellas [sp?] I think was his name) was walking across the parade deck and the Sgt Maj. was screaming at me to stop so I did and you asked me if there was a candidate aboard and I yelled "YES SIR!!" and you said "Get that candidate to sickbay!" So, off I went, on across the parade deck and up the one way street beside of HQ, the wrong way! I was sure that I would get my butt reamed for that one but I never heard another word about it. That's just one memory of that summer at OCS, I was sent to TBS at the end of the summer to finish out my tour. You may not remember that incident, but I'm sure you remember Lcpl. Joseph Hubbard, your driver. We were very good friends, me, Hubbard and Timothy Hass. You may remember him, he put you in mind of Gomer Pyle. Hubbard went to MSG and I haven't heard from him since. Sorry to ramble on like this, but I like reminicing about "the good 'ol days". Like I said, it was an honor and a privilege to be in your command, if only for 5 months. When you got out, the Corps lost one in a million. May God bless you and your family. Semper Fi Sir! Cpl. Michael Baldwin
