Throughout his career in the Ohio General
Assembly, representing the 16th Ohio Senate District, State Senator
Steve Stivers has been an advocate for programs and initiatives that
promote economic development and encourage job creation. He has
sponsored legislation to end lawsuit abuse, protect children and
families, lower taxes for Ohio seniors, freeze skyrocketing college
tuition costs, and improve Ohio’s business climate. Among his
accomplishments, Senator Stivers has worked in the Ohio General
Assembly to pass meaningful legislative initiatives, including the
following efforts:

Instituted comprehensive tort reform to level
the scales of justice. (SB 80)

Allowed members of the Armed Forces Reserves
who are called to active duty to defer paying property taxes
during the length of a deployment. (SB 47)

Provided doctors limited civil protections if
they choose to give free care to uninsured people, resulting in
more than $1 million of free care in Franklin County alone. (SB
86)

Worked to ensure those with disabilities in
need of healthcare have the option to buy-in to Ohio’s
Medicaid system. (SB 4)

Passed a balanced, fiscally conservative
state budget, provided the largest personal property tax cut in
Ohio history and froze tuition rates for Ohio’s college
students. (HB 119)

Worked to strengthen Ohio’s sex offender
laws, keeping offenders behind bars and our children safe. (SB
97)
Senator Stivers serves as the vice-chairman of
the powerful Senate Finance and Financial Institutions Committee and
as the Chairman of the Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee.
Additionally, he serves on the Judiciary Civil Justice; Judiciary
Criminal Justice; and the Ways and Means and Economic Development
Committees in the Ohio Senate. He also serves on the Legislative
Service Commission. Before his service in public office, Senator
Stivers maintained a professional career including seven years with
Bank One, three years at the Ohio Company and five years as a staff
member in the Ohio Senate.
Senator Stivers is currently a Lieutenant Colonel
in the Ohio Army National Guard. He has more than 23 years of
service and served the nation oversees for nearly a year in
Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar and Djibouti. During
his service in the Army National Guard he has held positions as
Radio-Teletype Operator, Chemical Officer, Company Commander,
Logistics Officer, Executive Officer and Battalion Commander.
Senator Stivers holds a Masters degree in Business Administration
from The Ohio State University (1996) and a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Economics and International Relations from The Ohio State
University (1989). Stivers lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife
Karen.
