Personal Biography Page For

Doug Denneny (D)
Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives
Virginia's 11th Congressional District

My name is Doug Denneny. I served our country as an officer in the United States Navy for over twenty-two years and now I’m ready to serve our nation again…this time in the U.S. Congress. It is time for change in the 11th District. If you give me your vote we can work together to make our district and our nation a better place to live, work, and play.

I have extensive Capitol Hill experience, first as a Navy Legislative Fellow for for a U.S. Senator and then as a deputy legislative liaison for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I know how to get things done on Capitol Hill, by working together with Democrats and Republicans. We need to change the tone in Washington, D.C. and that will take leadership.

Leadership is not something new to me. In the Navy I led over two hundred military personnel as a commanding officer of a fighter squadron. I was honored to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor following my combat experiences in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I understand first-hand the complexities of this war and the need to create an exit strategy to bring our troops home safely.

Following my years in the military I decided to take on leadership roles here at home in Fairfax County. I was elected and serve as President of the Mantua Citizens’ Association where I represent the interests of the residents of over 1600 homes. I was appointed and have served on three Fairfax County Boards: the Tysons Corner Land Use Task Force, the Environmental Quality Advisory Council and the Industrial Development Authority.

My experiences in the military and in my community have prepared me well to serve as a member of Congress, and I am driven to improve our nation and the 11th District. As your Congressman I will fight to:

  • Set us on the correct path to bring our troops home
  • Balance our budget, fix our economy and find ways to continue to create jobs for working class people
  • Provide world class healthcare for all Americans
  • Manage growth better and fix our transportation problems

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Arts in National Security Studies with a certificate in legislative studies from Georgetown University. I spent a term at Oxford University in England studying economics, completed a political candidate training program at UVA’s Sorensen Institute, and was a national security fellow at MIT’s Seminar XXI fellowship program. Today I am a business development professional for Boeing.
