These awards are second only to the Medal of Honor in precedence, and the men and women who have received them certainly deserve to have the legacy of their heroism preserved. Early works, such as Harry Stringer's efforts to record the deeds of World War I recipients and publish them in 1921, are almost impossible to obtain nearly a century later.
