On December 20, 1860 South Carolina became the first of 11 states to declare independence from the United States and secede from the Union.  Few North Carolina residents owned slaves, but 6 months after South Carolina seceeded,  (May 20, 1861),   North Carolina ALSO seceded from the Union.
