7After US Cavalry General O. O. Howard tried to enforce a 13-year old treaty requiring  the Nez Pierce Indians to relocate from their home in Idaho, Chief Joseph led his tribe in one of the most incredible 4-month treks in history.  Culminating with a 5 day standoff in Montana, the valiant but weary leader, accompanied by 5 warriers, ended it when he handed General Howard his rifle with the words:  "I am tired of fighting.  My heart is sick and sad.  From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."
