Most people don't know that John Hancock (remember him for his famous signature on the Declaration of Independence) was elected to be our first President under our earliest form of Government.  That form of government, the Articles of Confederation, was so poor however, that John Hancock saw the office as worthless and refused to accept the Presidency.
