The land where Arlington Cemetery is located today was part of the estate of George Washington that passed on to his granddaughter Mary Ann. It was here that she and Robert E. Lee lived until the Civil War. Their home is now called "Arlington House", but originally was known as the Custis/Lee Mansion. When George Washington died in 1799 it was Henry Lee, father of General Lee, that eulogized President Washington before Congress calling him "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his Countrymen."
