On February 13, 1879 the U.S.S. Constitution was in danger when it passed through a heavy gale in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Captain of the Top Joseph Matthews, along with Captain of the Top James Horton courageously went over the stern in the midst of the storm to cut the fastenings of the ship's rudder chains. Carpenter's Mate Henry Williams then made the necessary repairs to the rudder. For these courageous acts, despite the danger from the sea and the storm, all three men were awarded the Medal of Honor. |
