Following the earthquake and fire which occurred in Yokohama, Japan, on September 1, 1923, Ensign Thomas Ryan, with complete disregard for his own life, extricated a woman from the Grand Hotel, thus saving her life.
Thomas Ryan graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1921.
