On July 21, 1905, while at San Diego, California, a deadly boiler explosion ripped through the U.S.S. Bennington. Of the ships 197 officers and crew, 62 were killed and more than 40 were wounded. Machinist's Mate First Class Oscar Nelson was one of ten members of the Bennington's crew who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions to rescue comrades and minimize damage in the explosion and resulting fires. |
