The crew of the U.S.S. Missouri was engaged in target practice in the waters near Pensacola, Florida, when an accident occurred in the after turret, killing five officers and twenty-eight men, and placing the entire ship in danger of being destroyed by an explosion. Chief Gunner's Mate Mons Monssen, along with Chief Gunner Robert Cox and Gunner's Mate Charles Schepke heroically, and at the risk of their lives, managed to bring the fire under control. Chief gunner's Mate Monssen entered the burning magazine himself through the scuttle, and tried extinguishing the fire by throwing water with his hands, until a hose was passed to him. The action of the three sailors saved their ship from destruction and saved the lives of their comrades. All three men received the Medal of Honor for this heroic action. |
