Following the sinking of the submarine U.S.S. Squalus on May 23, 1939, an intensive rescue effort was mounted to rescue surviving crewmen in the sunken vessel. Chief Metalsmith McDonald was one of four Navy divers who received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions in what became the first rescue of sailors from a sunken submarine. His leadership, masterly skill, general efficiency, and untiring devotion to duty in directing diving operations, and in making important and difficult dives under the most hazardous conditions, characterized conduct far above and beyond the ordinary call of duty. |
