Chief Gunner's Mate Thomas Eadie was one of a group of divers called to attempt a rescue after the submarine U.S.S. S-4 sank with all her crew aboard, after a collision at sea near Provincetown, Massachusetts. Eadie made the first dive of the day and was not expected to dive again that day. Later however, Chief Torpedoman Fred Michels made a dive in efforts to connect an airline to the submarine, which rested on the ocean floor 102 feet below the surface. Weather was poor and diving conditions were dangerous, and Fred Michels became fouled in the cables on the ocean floor. Chief Gunner's Mate Eadie, under the most adverse diving conditions, deliberately, knowingly, and willingly took his own life in his hands by promptly descending to the rescue in response to the desperate need of his companion diver. After two hours of extremely dangerous and heartbreaking work, by his cool, calculating, and skillful labors, he succeeded in his mission and brought Michels safely to the surface. |
