Lieutenant Commander William Corry and Lieutenant Arthur Wagner were flying from Hartford, Connecticut, in a borrowed Army Trainer. Wagner was the pilot with Corry as passenger and lifted off, reaching a height of about 75 feet when the engine quite. To avoid a tree, Wagner banked and stalled, falling off on one wing and crashing in flames. Lieutenant Commander Corry was thrown clear of the burning wreckage, but returned to the flaming airplane to try and rescue his comrade who was trapped inside the aircraft. Wagner miraculously broke free, but died that night. Lieutenant Commander Corry was severely burned in his heroic action and died from his injuries three days later--his 31st birthday. |
| William Corry graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1910. |
