Commander Richard Byrd and his friend and partner Machinist Floyd Bennett received the Medal of Honor for their historic expedition to the Arctic, contributing to the success of the first heavier-than-air flight to the North Pole and safe return. The mission was a private venture, for which both men obtained a leave of absence from the Navy, and the activities were privately funded. |
