Machinist Floyd Bennett and his close friend Commander Richard Byrd received the Medal of Honor for their historic expedition to the Arctic, contributing to the success of the first heavier-than-air flight to the North Pole and safe return. The mission was a private venture, for which both men obtained a leave of absence from the Navy, and the activities were privately funded. |
