Captain Young in an HH-3E helicopter was escorting another helicopter attempting night rescue of an Army team facing imminent death or capture in Southeast Asia on November 9, 1967. Heavy enemy fire severely damaged the lead helicopter, yet its commander rescued three men before recommending abandonment of further rescue attempts. Ignoring the warning, Captain Young hovered under intense fire until the remaining survivors were aboard. Then his aircraft crashed in flames from enemy fire. Disregarding serious burns, Captain Young aided one of the wounded men, then attempted to lead the enemy from his position. Despite intense pain, he declined rescue because hostile forces were positioning to entrap rescue aircraft. For more than 17 hours he evaded capture until finally rescued. |
