Specialist Four Class Wright's unit came under intense fire from a number of enemy bunkers and snipers in nearby trees. He quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker, killing one Viet Cong who attempted to escape. Leaping to the top of a dike, he and Sergeant Leonard Keller charged the enemy bunkers. Armed with a light machinegun, he and his comrade began a systematic assault on the enemy bunkers. While Sergeant Keller neutralized the fire from the first bunker with his machinegun, Wright threw in a hand grenade killing its occupant. Then he and Wright charged a second bunker, killing its occupant. They attacked a third bunker that had pinned down much of their platoon and killed the enemy. Keller and Wright then assaulted four more bunkers, killing the enemy. Throughout they had been continuously exposed to sniper fire but the ferocity of their assault had forced the snipers to flee. The two men gave immediate chase, driving the enemy away from the friendly unit. When his ammunition was exhausted, Specialist Wright returned to the platoon to assist in evacuation of the wounded. The two men had driven an enemy platoon from a well prepared position and accounted for numerous enemy dead. |
