Captain Wilbanks was piloting an unarmed 0-1 aircraft in a visual reconnaissance mission ahead of a South Vietnamese Ranger Battalion near Dalat, South Vietnam on February 27, 1967. He discovered a numerically superior hostile force poised to ambush the Rangers. The Viet Cong, realizing that Captain Wilbanks' discovery precluded a surprise attack, fired on him with all available fire power and advanced against the Rangers. Captain Wilbanks, knowing close-support aircraft could not arrive in time, unhesitatingly assumed a close-support role, flying through withering fire at tree-top level, firing his rifle. He interrupted the enemy advance, allowing the Rangers to withdraw safely, but during his final attack he was mortally wounded and crashed. |
