Captain Lance Sijan ejected from his disabled aircraft over Laos (though his official citation lists North Vietnam as the site of his ejection) on November 9, 1967. Badly injured, he nevertheless eluded capture for more than six weeks in attempts to escape and evade. Suffering from shock and extreme weight loss, he was finally captured and taken to a holding point. In his emaciated and crippled condition, he overpowered his guard and escaped, but was recaptured.
Imprisoned, kept in solitary confinement, interrogated and severely tortured, he still divulged no information. Captain Sijan was put in the care of another prisoner. During periods of consciousness, until his death, he never complained of his physical condition and on several occasions spoke of future escape attempts.Lance Sijan graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Class of 1965, and is the only graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy ever awarded the Medal of Honor.
