Under heavy fire, Sergeant Robinson moved his men, instructing and inspiring them, and placing them in advantageous positions while snipers in nearby trees inflicted heavy casualties. Locating one whose fire was taking the heaviest toll, with a grenade launcher he eliminated the sniper. Seeing a medic hit while administering aid to a wounded sergeant he charged through a hail of fire and dragged both comrades to safety. He moved about under intense fire to collect weapons and ammunition and redistribute them to able-bodied soldiers. Seeing another wounded comrade in front of his position, he defied enemy fire to effect a rescue and was himself wounded in the shoulder and leg. Despite his wounds, he dragged the soldier to shelter. While patching his wounds he saw an enemy machinegun which had inflicted a number of casualties on the American force. His ammunition expended, he seized two grenades and charged the entrenched enemy weapon. Hit again in the leg with a tracer round which set fire to his clothing, he ripped the burning clothing from his body and staggered through the enemy fire within grenade range of the enemy machinegun. Sustaining two additional chest wounds, he destroying the enemy position, as he fell dead on the battlefield. |
