Staff Sergeant Miller was team leader of an American-Vietnamese long-range recon patrol operating deep in enemy territory. After insertion his patrol moved forward on its mission when one of the members tripped a booby trap which wounded four soldiers. He quickly administered first aid to the wounded and directed his team into across a small stream bed. Soon he saw the lead element of what he estimated to be a platoon-size enemy force moving toward his location. He directed the small team up a hill and remained alone to meet the attack. He single-handedly repulsed two attacks and caused the enemy to withdraw in disorder. He rejoined his team, established contact with a forward air controller, and arranged the evacuation of his patrol from a bomb crater 150 meters away. He reconnoitered the route and led his men through the enemy-controlled jungle to the extraction site. As the helicopter hovered to pick up the patrol, the enemy launched a savage attack against the beleaguered team, driving it off. Miller led the team in a valiant defense which drove back the enemy and, though seriously wounded moved forward to again single-handedly meet the hostile attackers. He gallantly repelled two attacks before a friendly force reached the patrol. |
