Sergeant McKibben was leading his point element along a well-traveled trail when it came under fire from a fortified bunker. Sergeant McKibben charged through bamboo and heavy brush, killed the gunner, secured the weapon and directed his patrol forward. As they moved out he saw movement to the flank which was promptly neutralized by air support. The patrol continued its mission and as the lead element rounded the bend of a river it came under heavy fire from camouflaged bunkers. He observed one of his men fall wounded and with complete disregard for his safety, sprang to his comrade's side and pulled him to safety behind a rock emplacement. Seeing that his patrol was now pinned down, he charged through the brush and hail of automatic weapons fire, killing the enemy and taking his weapon. He continued his assault against another bunker when his rifle ran out of ammunition; however, he used the captured enemy weapon until it too was empty and then silenced the position with grenades. He covered the advance of his men, observing the fire of another bunker. Single-handedly assaulted this position but was mortally wounded. Still, he fired a final burst, killing the enemy and enabling the patrol to continue the assault. |
