Second Lieutenant Graves' eight-man patrol, while on a long-range recon mission, observed seven enemy approaching. Reacting instantly, he deployed his men and directed their fire. When the fire ceased, he and two patrol members made a search of the area and came under hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. When one of his men was hit he moved through the fire-swept area to his radio and, while directing suppressive fire, requested air support and adjusted artillery and helicopter gunship fire upon the enemy. Observing that several of the enemy were still alive, he launched a determined assault, eliminating the remaining enemy troops. Moving his patrol to a landing zone for extraction, the unit again came under intense fire which wounded him and two more Marines. Refusing medical attention, he again adjusted air strikes and artillery fire while leading his men to a new landing site. Guiding the incoming aircraft and boarding his men, he realized that one of the wounded had not embarked. He directed the aircraft to depart and, along with another Marine, moved to the casualty. He directed fire until a second helicopter arrived, at which point the enemy fire intensified, hitting the helicopter and causing it to crash. All aboard were killed. |
