Captain Grant's company was participating in a search and destroy operation when the leading platoon made contact and a fierce fire-fight ensued. Captain Grant was ordered maneuver the two remaining platoons to envelop and destroy the enemy. They encountered intense enemy fire from the front and flank and were ordered to deploy in a defensive position when the enemy attacked in "human wave'' assaults. Captain Grant moved along the hastily formed defensive line repositioning soldiers to fill gaps created by the mounting casualties. Seeing a platoon leader wounded, he hastened to his aid and moved him to a more secure position but was wounded in the shoulder. Refusing treatment, he returned to the perimeter. While attempting to evacuate a wounded soldier, he was pinned down by fire from an enemy machinegun. With hand grenades he crawled forward and knocked out the machinegun, killing the crew and moving the wounded man to safety. Seeing other wounded men pinned down by enemy fire forward, he led five men across the fire-swept open ground to effect a rescue. Following return of the wounded men to the perimeter, a concentration of mortar fire landed in their midst and Captain Grant was killed instantly. |
