First Lieutenant Gardner's platoon was advancing to relieve a company that had been pinned down for several hours by a superior enemy force. The enemy occupied bunker positions, expertly concealed, the approaches well covered by automatic weapons, machineguns and mortars. Leading the assault, Lieutenant Gardner charged through a hail of fire across an open rice paddy. On reaching the first bunker he destroyed it and dashed to the second bunker and eliminated it. Crawling along the dike, he reached the third bunker but before he could arm a grenade, the gunner leaped up, firing at him. He returned the fire and killed the enemy at a distance of six feet. Following seizure of the main enemy position, he reorganized the platoon and, advancing to the new assault position, was pinned down by an enemy machinegun in a fortified bunker. He collected several grenades and charged the position, firing his rifle to neutralize the defenders, and dropped a grenade into the bunker and vaulted beyond. Rolling into a ditch to gain cover, he moved toward a new source of fire, leaped from the ditch and advanced with a grenade in one hand and firing his rifle with the other. With a last valiant effort he destroyed the bunker before he fell dead on the rim of the bunker. |
