Major Day ejected over North Vietnam on August 26, 1967 when his aircraft was hit by ground fire. Injured in the ejection, he was captured immediately and taken to a prison camp. There he was interrogated and severely tortured for several days. Major Day's injuries gave his guards the impression that he was incapable of further resistance, causing them to relax their vigilance. He escaped and started for South Vietnam, evading patrols and crossing a river, despite his injuries. Delirious, he lost his direction and wandered aimlessly for days. Attempts to signal U.S. aircraft failed. He was then ambushed, wounded, recaptured and returned to his original prison camp. Later he was moved to Hanoi. Totally debilitated and injured, he continued maximum resistance until his release on March 14, 1973.

Major Day was the only POW to escape from prison in North Vietnam and then recaptured by the Viet Cong in the South.

George Day served in the Iowa National Guard before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. During his military service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam he received 60 medals, 40 of which were for Valor including the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, two Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, four Purple Hearts and ten Air Medals.
