Major Crandall was pilot of an Army helicopter inserting troops into Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley on November 14, 1965. His helicopter began taking fire on its fourth trip into the landing zone and, after refueling, returned with the first flight of eight helicopters for a fifth insertion, when he came under such intense enemy fire that the second flight was ordered to abort. The inability of helicopters to thereafter fly into the hot LZ left the troops on the ground without needed resupply or medical evacuation. After rounding up volunteers, despite the intense enemy fire, Major Crandall returned to the landing zone, leading two other aircraft in efforts to resupply the ground troops. Landing on the ground under intense fire, he supervised the loading of wounded soldiers aboard his helicopter for evacuation. Thereafter he continued his intrepid actions, for a total of 22 air missions under the most intense enemy fire, retiring from the battlefield only after all possible service had been rendered to the Infantry battalion.
