Staff Sergeant Cavaiani was a platoon leader providing security for an isolated radio relay site in enemy territory when the camp came under a barrage of enemy fire from a superior size enemy force. He repeatedly exposed himself to move about the camp directing fire and rallying his men. When the platoon was to be evacuated he remained to direct helicopters into the landing zone. He was able to direct the first 3 in evacuating a major portion of the platoon but was forced by increased enemy fire to remain overnight. The next morning the enemy launched a ground attack to annihilate the remaining small force, advancing in two ranks. SSgt. Cavaiani returned a barrage of small arms and hand grenade fire but was unable to slow them. He ordered the remaining men to escape while he provided cover fire. He recovered a machinegun, stood up, and began firing the machinegun in a sweeping motion along the two ranks of advancing enemy soldiers. Through Staff Sergeant Cavaiani's valiant efforts with complete disregard for his safety, the majority of the remaining platoon members were able to escape. While inflicting severe losses on the advancing enemy force, Staff Sergeant Cavaiani was wounded numerous times. |
