Three helicopters were unable to extract a Special Forces Team due to intense enemy fire. Sergeant Benavidez monitored the operation by radio when they returned to off-load wounded crewmembers. He boarded an aircraft to assist in another attempt, directing the aircraft to a clearing where he ran to reposition the time though wounded in his leg, face, and head. He carried half of the wounded to the waiting aircraft and then provided protective fire by running alongside it as it moved to pick up remaining team members. He recovered the body and classified documents of a dead team leader. He was wounded in the abdomen and hit with grenade fragments in his back and the pilot was mortally wounded and his helicopter crashed. Sergeant Benavidez secured the documents and aided the crew out of the overturned aircraft. He distributed water and ammunition, re-instilling in the men a will to live and fight, and began calling in tactical air strikes. When another helicopter was able to land, he ferried his comrades to the craft. Upon reaching the aircraft, he saw and killed 2 enemy who were rushing the craft. He made one last trip to the perimeter to ensure that all classified material had been collected or destroyed, and to bring in the remaining wounded. |
