Through ten days of bitter fighting at the Chosin Reservoir, Lieutenant Colonel Page refused repeated orders to return to the relative safety of Hamhung to remain in the field with surrounded and outnumbered Marines and scattered Army units. At Koto-ri he improvised an airstrip to evacuate wounded, and defended it against repeated attacks, constantly exposing himself to enemy fire and twice mounting a tank to man its machine guns. In a low-level flight over enemy lines, he dropped grenades and sprayed enemy positions with his carbine. When, after ten days of bitter combat, the Marines began withdrawing from Koto-ri, LTC Page joined the rear guard which came under attack in a narrow pass. Mounting an abandoned tank, LTC Page ignored intense enemy fire to cover the passage of the column. On December 10 when the column was again under attack and progress halted, he fought his way to the head of the column and plunged heedlessly into the enemy positions. His valiant assault so surprised the enemy that the attack was disrupted and the column began moving again. LTC Page remained in his forward position, continually engaging the enemy singly-handedly, until he was mortally wounded.
John Page never realized his dream of a West Point education due to poor eyesight, so he attended Princeton University, graduating in 1926 with a degree in engineering and an ROTC commission. During WWII he did realize his dream of commanding an Artillery Battalion in combat in Germany. Ordered to the prestigious Command and General Staff college at Fort Leavenworth when the Korean War began, he requested a combat assignment in lieu of the classroom, succeeding after "pulling many strings." His valor at the Chosin Reservoir was so incredible, the Marines among whom he served submitted him for the Navy Cross, making him one of only three Army recipients of that award in Korea.
