When President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor to Salvatore Giunta on November 16, 2010, the young soldier from Hiawatha, Iowa, became the first LIVING recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions since the Vietnam War. |
|
On October 23, 20076, hen an insurgent force ambush in Afghanistan split Specialist Giunta's squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a comrade back to cover. While he was engaging the enemy and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, Specialist Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow American soldier who was wounded. He threw grenades and returned fire as he rescued his comrade and fought off Taliban fighters. His immediate intervention freed the man. He provided medical aid to that wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security. |
