On April 14, 2004, Corporal Dunham was manning a checkpoint in Karabilah, Iraq, when an insurgent leaped from his car and began choking the Marine. Two comrades raced to Dunham's assistant, but he tried to warned them away with the words, "Watch his hand." They were reportedly Dunham-s final words, for moments later the insurgent dropped a grenade. With grave concern for his two comrades, Corporal Dunham covered the grenade with his Kevlar helmet and then his body. The subsequent blast wounded all three Marines, but Dunham's actions sheltered the other two from the full-effect of the explosion. Eight day's later Corporal Dunham died of his wounds at Bethesda Naval Hospital. |
| Born on November 10, 1981, Jason Dunham is the ONLY Marine to share a birthday with the U.S. Marine Corps. His Medal of Honor action was the first for a Marine since the end of the Vietnam War. |
