Early at the turn of the century a rebel force in China that called itself the Society of "Righteous and Harmonious Fists", subsequently called the "Boxers", initiated a rebellion in China that threatened the legations of several nations in Peking and Tientsen. The 1st Regiment (Marines) arrived in China on June 19 and tried to seize Tientsin, but was driven back. While still retreating on June 21, Marine Private Charles Carter was accidentally left behind after breaking a leg, and was last seen hiding in a ditch. Lieutenants Hardy and Smedley Butler led four enlisted Marines back to rescue their comrade. Private Charles Francis was one of four enlisted Marines who received the Medal of Honor for the rescue in which two men formed a rear guard to cover the two officers and two other enlisted men as they carried Private Carter 7 miles in four hours, all while under fire. The two Marine officers received brevets for this action. |
