First Lieutenant Louis Van Schaick's detachment entered a canyon in pursuit of a band of insurgents, and at the head of his men, Lieutenant Van Schaick was the first to emerge from the canyon. Upon breaking out into the open he saw a column of enemy guerilla fighters, located in a strategic position from which they could easily fire upon his men as they emerged one-by-one from the Canyon. Without hesitation Lieutenant Van Schaick galloped forward into the enemy position, firing upon them with such intensity and attacking with such ferocity that their ranks were broken and they fell back in confusion until Lieutenant Van Schaick's men arrived to reinforce their brave leader and dispatch the enemy force. |
| Louis Van Schaick attended the US Military Academy at West Point, and was a Non-graduating member of the Class of 1900. |
