From the spring of 1898 until early the following year, most battles in the Philippine Islands were sporadic ambushes of small American patrols in the jungles, as the U.S. Army sought to root out the rebel forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. A surgeon with the U.S. Volunteers, Paul Straub went to the rescue of a wounded officer at Alos Zambales, Luzon, during a battle on December 21, 1899. With his pistol he repulsed an insurgent attack and, despite the great risk to his own life, reached the wounded officer and carried him to safety. |
