In a skirmish with Philippine insurrectionist rebel forces near Paete on April 12, 1899, several men of the 1st North Dakota Infantry fell wounded when ambushed by a greatly superior force. Alone and single-handedly, Private Thomas Sletteland held the rebels at bay, defending his dead and wounded comrades. |
