From the spring of 1898 until early the following year, most battles in the Philippine Islands were sporadic ambushes of small American patrols in the jungles, as the U.S. Army sought to root out the rebel forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. During a battle with Filipino rebel forces near Labo, Luzon, Philippine Islands on October 29, 1899, Assistant Surgeon George Mathews ignored the danger of continuing combat and heavy enemy fire to treat the wounded. When rebel forces attacked the wounded officers and men under his care, Assistant Surgeon Mathews grabbed the carbine of one of his wounded comrades to beat back the attacking force and save the lives of his men. |
