From the spring of 1898 until early the following year, most battles in the Philippine Islands were sporadic ambushes of small American patrols in the jungles, as the U.S. Army sought to root out the rebel forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. On November 11, 1899, Major John A. Logan was commanding his battalion of the 33d Infantry in action against rebel entrenchments at San Jacinto, Philippine Islands. Gallantly leading his men forward against the enemy positions, he was killed at the head of the attack. |
| John A. Logan, son of the famous Civil War General by the same name, attended the US Military Academy at West Point, and was a Non-graduating member of the Class of 1887. |
