From the spring of 1898 until early the following year, most battles in the Philippine Islands were sporadic ambushes of small American patrols in the jungles, as the U.S. Army sought to root out the rebel forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. In action at Vigan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on December 4, 1899, Private Joseph Epps discovered a group of insurgent rebels behind a wall. Fearlessly he climbed the wall and covered the enemy force with his gun, ordering them to stack their arms and surrender. For his single-handed capture of this enemy force, Private Epps was awarded the Medal of Honor. |
