From the spring of 1898 until early the following year, most battles in the Philippine Islands were sporadic ambushes of small American patrols in the jungles, as the U.S. Army sought to root out the rebel forces of Emilio Aguinaldo. Sergeant Clarence Condon was commanding a detachment of four men in an engagement with forty entrenched insurgent rebels during jungle fighting near Calulut, Luzon, Philippine Islands on November 5, 1899. Despite the superior numbers of enemy, Sergeant Condon fearlessly led his small detachment in a charge that inflicted heavy losses on the enemy force, and routed them from their positions, forcing them to retreat into the jungle. |
