Near Lake Lanao on the island of Mindanao in the Philippine Islands, First Lieutenant Charles Bickham became aware of a wounded American soldier lying dangerously exposed on the field of battle. At the risk of his own life Lieutenant Bickham crossed the fire-swept field to reach the wounded American, and then brought him safely to shelter, thereby saving his life.

Charles Bickham entered active duty in the U.S. Army from the Ohio National Guard.
