Colonel James Franklin Bell was leading the 36th Infantry near in an engagement with Filipino insurgent forces at Porac, Luzon, Philippine Islands on September 9, 1899. Advancing at the head of his regiment and under fire from enemy forces in a concealed bamboo thicket, with Lieutenant Colonel William Grove at his side he courageously charged seven enemy. The two officers, armed only with pistols, forced the enemy captain and two privates to quickly surrender. Both Colonel Bell and Lieutenant Colonel Grove received Medals of Honor in this action. |
