On the day following the successful attacks on the Spanish positions on San Juan and Kettle Hills, the enemy mounted attacks on the American positions all along the line of battle. When the area along the line held by the 9th U.S. Infantry was assaulted at 10 A.M., the soldiers did their best to return fire from the shelter of their trenches. One young American soldier rose above the trenches to return fire, when he was shot in the chest and fell outside the trench and rolled down the small dirt embankment before it. Despite the heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Welborn jumped from the safety of his trench and rushed to the aid of the wounded American, dragging him to safety despite the intense enemy fire that was directed on his open position. |
