On the morning of July 3, 1898 the Spanish Fleet that had been blockaded inside Santiago Harbor for six weeks attempted to effect their escape. In the running battle with the American ships, all six vessels of the Spanish flotilla were destroyed in a clear victory. Private Harry Macneal was the only person to receive the Medal of Honor in this major and historic battle. He was cited for braving the enemy fire and displaying uncommon gallantry aboard his ship, the USS Brooklyn. |
