During the battles to take San Juan and Kettle Hills outside Santiago, Cuba, Private William Keller was one of 12 soldiers (out of 15 total awards) to be cited for "Gallantly assisting in the rescue of wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy enemy fire." During the attack on the two hills, the enemy fire was extremely heavy and the Americans were advancing across large areas of open ground. When a soldier fell wounded, he was at the mercy of enemy shelling as well as snipers at the edges of the jungle. Private Keller and his 11 fellow Medal Recipients were recognized for taking the uncommon action of rushing to the rescue of these wounded, despite the exposed positions or the heavy enemy fire, and then personally carrying them to safety.
