James Robb Church was an assistant surgeon with the 1st Volunteer Cavalry when, on June 24th his unit and members of the 10th Cavalry, some 430 American soldiers, began the dangerous 4-mile trek from the coastal village of Siboney to the inland town of La Quasina. When heavy fighting broke out, Church braved enemy fire to treat the wounded. Repeatedly, despite the heavy concentration of enemy fire, he also carried several wounded men from exposed, front line positions, to the safety of rear areas. |
| Assistant Surgeon Church's action was the first Medal of Honor action by a member of the US Army of the Spanish-American War. |
