In an engagement with a hostile Indian force at Big Dry Fork, Arizona, on July 17, 1882, Troop I was crossing a canyon rim when they were surrounded on all sides by the hostile force. The soldiers began a retreat to the canyon when they were fiercely attacked. First Lieutenant Frank West rallied his command, restoring order, and then led his men in the advance on the enemy's fortified positions along the canyon rim. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were Second Lieutenant George Morgan, Second Lieutenant Thomas Cruise and First Sergeant Charles Taylor.
Frank West graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1872.
