After hostile Indians attacked a ranch near Camp Canada Alamosa, New Mexico, Second Lieutenant George Burnett took the first available detachment to pursue and attack the hostile Apache marauders. With a fifty-man force, some of whom were mounted Mexicans from the plundered ranch, he located and attacked the hostile force that outnumbered his small command two-to-one. In the battle that followed Lieutenant Valois commenced a backward movement before the charge, and in doing so left four men behind. When the retreat was sounded the four men pleaded "For God's sake Lieutenant, don't leave us; out lives depend on it." Lieutenant Valois was too far away to hear the call, but the detachment commander, Second Lieutenant George Burnett called for volunteers to rescue the four trapped men. Private Augustus Walley and First Sergeant Moses Williams, along with Lieutenant Burnett, held off the Indian force while the rest of the detachment retreated. For this action, as well as other acts of heroism in the battle at Cuchillo Negro Mountains, all three men were awarded the Medal of Honor.
